Unit 3: Activity 1: Illustrative Mathematics Tasks Learning Progression

Unit 3 Activity 1 is titled, “Illustrative Mathematics
Tasks Learning Progression” and will take
approximately 45 minutes to complete.

The purpose of this activity is to illustrate, using tasks
and performance assessments, how mathematical knowledge
and skills develop over time.

illustrative mathematics Within this activity, you will interact with mathematical tasks from Illustrative Mathematics External Link. Illustrative Mathematics is an initiative of the Institute for Mathematics and Education, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Take five minutes and review their Web site.

Illustrative Mathematics provides guidance to states, assessment consortia, testing companies, and curriculum developers by illustrating the range and types of mathematical work that students experience in a faithful implementation of the CCSS, and by publishing other tools that support implementation of the standards.

According to Illustrative Mathematics, the tasks provided on their Web site are not meant to be considered in isolation. This entity is trying to create sets of tasks that when taken together illustrate a particular standard. For more information regarding tasks and intent, visit the “ FAQ” Illustrative Mathematics Web page.

Note: The Illustrative Mathematics tasks chosen for this activity were put together to represent one interpretation of a learning progression. Others may interpret the learning progression differently. The purpose of this representation is to illustrate how mathematical knowledge and skills develop over time.

The following video provides a quick overview of Illustrative Mathematics Tasks for grades K–8 and provides an example of a learning progression. As you watch, consider how mathematical knowledge and skills develop over time for students. After you watch the video you will have the opportunity to review each task in detail on an associated document.
