Unit 2, Activity 5:

2.5.3 Completing an Instructional Alignment Chart

Time 2 Try

Instructional Alignment Chart For this activity, follow the directions below to complete the Standard(s) for Grades/Course and Changes sections on the Instructional Alignment Chart:

  1. Download the Instructional Alignment Chart template.
  2. Choose a grade span below.
    • K–2
    • 3–5
    • 6–8
  3. As you read the given standard for your grade span, consider what is required of students in terms of content (what students are required to know) and processes (what students should be able to do).
    • Grade span K–2
      • Standard 1.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions (e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem).
    • Grade span 3–5:
      • Standard 4.OA.2: Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison (e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison).
    • Grade span 6–8
      • Standard 7.EE.1: Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
  4. On the Instructional Alignment Chart, record your chosen standard in the middle box of row 1.
  5. Using the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (with California additions) document, determine the adjacent standards aligned to your chosen standard. Record the adjacent standards on row 1 of the Instructional Alignment Chart.
  6. Consider the changes, similarities, and differences in content and processes between the three grade level standards in row 1. Record your findings on row 2 of the Instructional Alignment Chart.
Time 2 Extend

Complete the remaining sections of the Instructional Alignment Chart in collaboration with your colleagues.
