Analyzing Student Writing Responses Guides Instruction

Time to Reflect

The purpose of analyzing student work is to guide instruction and refine assessment. We will focus on guiding instruction.

The descriptors/characteristics in the revised scoring guide indicate trends in student work. Consider how you might move students from a lower-level writing response to a higher-level response for each component (standard).

Time to Extend

Think of a lesson that you need to teach. Use the CAESL Assessment Framework to plan for quality student work. What learning goals do you want students to meet for science and for literacy? What should the final student work look like? How will you design the scoring guide? What will you do with the trends in student work to monitor instruction?

Please continue on to Unit 4 where you will extend your understanding of using science student notebooks with your students.
