Resources for Further Exploration

There are several resources and tools available to consider the question: What steps can I take to ensure that students and teachers have access to instructional materials that support student achievement of the CA CCSS? Below is a collection of resources for further exploration to support instructional leaders in their ongoing professional learning.

Curriculum Frameworks Chapters

These chapters include the State Board of Education (SBE)-adopted Criteria for Evaluating Instructional Materials for Kindergarten through Grade Eight for each subject area, the requirements for reviewing and adopting instructional materials for K–8, and helpful guidance for reviewing and adopting materials for grades 9–12.

  • Achieve the Core
    • Materials Alignment Toolkit
      A suite of tools for evaluating the alignment of instructional and assessment materials to the shifts and major features of the CCSS, the Materials Alignment Toolkit was developed in partnership with Achieve, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and the Council of Great City Schools.
      • EQuIP Quality Review Rubrics and Student Work Protocol
        Tools for evaluating the alignment of lessons, units and modules to the CCSS. Following the use of the Educators Evaluating Quality Instructional Products (EQuIP) rubrics, the Student Work Protocol can be used to analyze the relationship between student work and the quality and alignment of instructional materials.
      • Achieve the Core Instructional Materials Evaluation Tool
        A tool for evaluating a comprehensive textbook or textbook series for alignment to the shifts and major features of the CCSS.
      • Aligned
        Achieve the Core’s publication dedicated to the conversation about CCSS-aligned instructional materials.
  • Share My Lesson
    Developed by teachers for teachers, this site offers a free platform that gives access to teaching resources and tools and provides an online community for teacher collaboration. The site has a significant resource bank for CCSS, covering all the aspects of the standards. Share My Lesson was developed by the American Federation of Teachers and TES Connect.
  • EduCore
    Developed by ASCD, this site provides access to evidence-based tools and resources to help middle and high school educators implement the CCSS. Registered users can save their searches, organize tools, and annotate resources.
  • EngageNY
    This site includes useful information and curricular resources for CCSS implementation. Though it is designed for New York educators, this site has nationwide relevance.
  • America Achieves
    This is a video and lesson resource project. The video modules on this site exemplify the key pedagogical shifts represented by the transition to the CCSS.
  • CC.BetterLesson
    This site provides free, high-quality resources created through the National Education Association's Master Teacher Project.
  • LearnZillion
    A learning platform that combines video lessons, assessments, and progress reporting.
  • Teaching Channel Videos of Common Core Lessons
    There are over 100 free videos related to CCSS instruction available on the Teaching Channel. The videos provide lesson ideas, an overview of the standards, and demonstrations of teaching practices.
  • OER Commons Building the Promise of the Common Core Together
    Open Educational Resources (OER) Commons provides educators with open source tools and resources needed to engage teachers in making education content localized and adapted to their own environments.
  • OER Commons Common Core Reference Collection
    OER Commons has compiled CCSS implementation plans, transition guides, assessment tasks, exemplars, and curriculum, indexed from across the U.S.
  • OER Commons Common Core Aligned Resources
    OER has compiled K–12 resources aligned to the CCSS.
  • Illustrative Mathematics Project
    Provides a number of instructional and assessment tasks, lesson plans, and other resources that illustrate the range and types of mathematical work that students should experience in working to meet the CCSS.
  • Read Aloud Project
    Free, teacher-developed CCSS-aligned read aloud lessons for K-2 classrooms.
  • Basal Alignment Project
    A collection of replacement lessons for the most commonly used grades 3–5 basal readers.
  • Anthology Alignment Project
    Free, teacher-developed CCSS-aligned lessons for reading anthologies in grades 6–10.
  • Achieve the Core Close Reading Model Lessons
    Sets of grade 2–6 close reading model lessons that include complex texts, text-dependent questions, vocabulary, writing assignments, and assessment questions.
