Things to Look For

  1. Notice how students are making and defending claims based on textual evidence.
  2. Notice the teacher’s strategy for ensuring all students participate in the discussion.
  3. Notice how students are encouraged to apply prior knowledge and synthesize information from multiple sources.
  4. Notice how students are engaged in inquiry in order to explain real-world phenomena.
  5. Notice how the teacher supports students as they read a complex text by providing an annotation protocol.
  6. Notice the teacher’s use of probing questions.
  7. Notice how the teacher paraphrases student responses.
  8. Notice the use of graphic organizers and the document camera to engage students in the lesson.
  9. Notice how students are encouraged to discuss their thinking with each other.
  10. Notice how the science literacy expectations placed on students support their attainment of science content knowledge.
  11. Notice how students are developing familiarity with the features of science texts.

English Language Development Strategies

  1. Notice how the teacher restates/rephrases the learning expectations and activity instructions for students.
  2. Notice how the teacher completes the graphic organizer with students using the document camera.
  3. Notice how the teacher incorporates pictures and visuals to support the lesson.
  4. Notice how the teacher supports academic vocabulary development by providing synonyms and definitions for unfamiliar words.
  5. Notice how the teacher checks for individual student understanding prior to calling on the student to present his/her understanding to the whole class.
  6. Notice how the teacher asks students to act out breathing to demonstrate and clarify the time variable on the graph.
  7. Notice how the teacher specifies and models annotation strategies for reading.
  8. Notice the teacher’s use of strategic questioning.

Emerging Practices Discussion Prompts | DOC

Instructional leaders are encouraged to consider the following discussion prompts after viewing the classroom videos to support them in developing or informing local processes for implementing the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy.

  1. Discuss how the instruction in the videos demonstrates the three “New Emphases in the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy,” or shifts, mentioned in Chapter 1 (PDF) of the ELA/ELD Framework: Content-rich Informational Texts, Responding and Arguing from Textual Evidence, and Complex Texts and Academic Language.
  2. Discuss how the instruction in the videos supports literacy development across the content areas aligned to the CA CCSS for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 6–12.
  3. Discuss how the instructional strategies in the video align with the guidance in the ELA/ELD Framework grade-level chapters.
  4. Based on your instructional leadership expertise, is there anything you would suggest to enhance these lessons?
  5. How might these lessons need to be adapted to meet the needs of all students within your local context?
