Resources for Further Exploration

There are several resources and tools available to consider the question: How can my school or district establish structures that encourage literacy across the content areas? Below is a collection of resources for further exploration to support instructional leaders in their ongoing professional learning.

ELA/ELD Framework Chapters and Implementation Resources

  • Chart of ELA/ELD Framework Snapshots and Vignettes (PDF)
    Brief snapshots and longer vignettes are included throughout the ELA/ELD Framework to provide examples of instruction. This chart lists all the snapshots and vignettes, by chapter, and includes the grade level, page numbers, and indicates the different content areas each snapshot and vignette addresses. (Note: In the items column, “S” stands for a snapshot, and “V” represents vignettes.)
    • ELA/ELD Framework Snapshots – Chapters 3–7 (PDF)
      These snapshots are examples of instructional strategies for transitional kindergarten through grades eleven and twelve in ELA, ELD, and other content areas. All the framework snapshots, by chapter and grade-level, for chapters 3–7 are compiled into this document.
    • ELA/ELD Framework Vignettes – Chapters 3–7 (PDF; 2MB)
      Two vignettes are provided for each grade level (for TK to grade 8) and grade span (grades 9–10 and 11–12). These vignettes offer more in-depth examples of classroom practices, including connections to other disciplines and scaffolding for modifications for all students, including instruction for integrated and designated ELD. All vignettes, by chapter and grade-level, for chapters 3–7 are compiled into this document.

General Literacy Resources

  • Literacy Design Collaborative
    The Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) incorporates literacy into middle and high school content areas. Designed to make literacy instruction the foundation of the core subjects, LDC allows teachers to build content on top of a coherent approach to literacy. The LDC framework is used by teachers as common templates to create LDC tasks, modules, and courses designed to teach students to meet CCSS Literacy standards while engaging in demanding content.
  • Literacy in Learning Exchange
    The National Center for Literacy Education is a coalition of stakeholders representing the premiere education organizations, policy analysts, researchers, and foundations who are working together to identify and share the plans, practices, support systems, and assessments used by educator teams working to improve literacy learning.

History/Social Studies Literacy Resources

  • History Blueprint
    This site offers curricula, aligned with both the California Content Standards for History-Social Science and the CA CCSS for Literacy in History/Social Studies, developed by the History Blueprint Team at the California History-Social Science Project. Lessons combine historical investigation, carefully selected primary sources, activities to strengthen reading and writing, and practice evaluating arguments based on historical evidence.
