CAESL Assessment Framework: Quality Tools and Quality Use

The teacher wants to develop a scoring guide to provide formative feedback to students. A scoring guide is NOT a grading tool; its purpose is to guide teacher feedback to students and develop instruction based on the outcomes displayed in the student work.

To design this type of scoring guide, the teacher follows these steps:

Step 1: Identify the Expected Student Responses (ESRs)

Step 1 consists of three parts. Select the link to read the information regarding each part of Step 1.

  1. Teacher answers the prompt.
  2. Teacher determines scoring rubric components (standards).
    The science content standard(s) and CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy should be included in the scoring guide to identify the skills needed to achieve the science and literacy learning goals of the formative writing assessment.

  3. Teacher predicts the descriptors and develops a scoring guide with ESRs for each writing level.
