Learning Sequence

Take a moment to analyze the first grade teacher’s planning for student learning. Her planning includes identifying the conceptual flow of the science content and aligning specific CA CCSS ELA/Literacy and science content standards to increase student understanding. The teacher plans to teach multiple CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy standards across several days of instruction with appropriate scaffolding.

The first grade teacher developed a seven-day learning sequence in which she wanted her students to understand that liquids have properties by which they can be identified. She includes the general concept that liquids flow and take the shape of the container the liquids are held in, as well as properties that are specific to a liquid (e.g., transparent, color, translucent, viscous, foamy, or bubbly).  She wanted her students to discover these properties through experimentation, discussion, writing, and reading.
