The overarching goals of the Content Literacy in Science module are to enable K–12 educators to:

  • Deepen their understanding of the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects (CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy)
  • Observe the integration of science, speaking and listening, writing and reading in primary (1st grade), upper elementary (5th grade), middle (8th grade), and high school (10th grade) classrooms
  • Analyze student work for depth of knowledge in science and the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy
  • Differentiate instruction for English learners, students with special needs, and underachieving students
  • Apply their understanding of CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and science content to appropriate grade-level classroom context

Module Goals

This module focuses on the integration of literacy and science
in the classroom as well as “real world” application that is
required by the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy. The emphasis
of the Content Literacy for Science module is the integration
of inquiry-based science, speaking and listening, writing, and
reading informational text to: 
a) support the science learning; and, b) increase literacy skills.

This module consists of six units to transition you from awareness to implementation of the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy in your classroom:

Unit 2    Making it Real: Classroom Examples
Unit 3    Looking at Student Work
Unit 4    Science Notebook:  A Student’s Writing and Thinking Tool
Unit 5    Science:  A Natural Setting for Language Development
Unit 6    Planning For Student Success
