Additional Resources for Students with Disabilities

• The CCSS publication, "Application to Students with Disabilities", addresses how the standards can apply to students with disabilities and their special needs, and ensures access to the general curriculum.

• The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Web site includes a page outlining the CEC participation in development of the CCSS and additional resources for teachers specifically for Students With Disabilities. An additional resource for administrators, “Six principles for principals to consider in implementing CCSS for students with disabilities”, provides CCSS implementation guidance in the instruction and assessment of students receiving special education services.

• The Special Edge is a publication of the California Department of Education’s Special Education Division. Read the issue devoted to the CCSS.

However, these students may require additional time, appropriate instructional support, and aligned assessments as they acquire both English language proficiency and content area knowledge.

• California has revised and updated its English Language Development Standards for California Public Schools: Kindergarten through Grade Twelve . The overview of the document prioritizes meaning and interacting over language structure. Language is emphasized as “a complex and social meaning-making resource to be fostered via intellectually challenging, interactive, and dialogue-rich contexts focused on content knowledge and linguistic development” (p.18).

• Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), Framework for English Language Proficiency Development Standards corresponding to the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.
  The Framework outlines the underlying English language practices found in the CCSS and the NGSS, communicates to ELL stakeholders the language that all ELLs must acquire in order to successfully engage the CCSS and NGSS, and specifies a procedure by which to evaluate the degree of alignment present between the Framework and ELP standards under consideration or adopted by states.

• Materials Available from English Learner Leadership Conference:
  The 2013 English Learner Leadership Conference on Thursday, February 14, featured presentations by Robert Linquanti and George Bunch. Mr. Linquanti discussed the new ELD standards and Dr. Bunch focused on preparing English Learners in the new Common Core Standards era.
