Writing Standards 7, 8, and 9 outline foundational pre-writing work in which students engage in research to support the writing process indicated in the areas of writing listed in the previous writing standards of this unit.
In these standards, students conduct research projects to answer a question, or solve a problem. During their research, students gather primary and secondary information from multiple print and digital sources, and assess these sources for credibility and accuracy. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the subject under investigation and narrow or broaden the inquiry when it is appropriate. Using a standard format for citation appropriate for their technical subject, students will quote or paraphrase the data and/or conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism. Students will use evidence gathered from informational texts to support their analysis, reflection and research.
