Natomas High School, School Program

Natomas High School is a public high school located in Natomas Unified School District situated in northern Sacramento. Total enrollment for Natomas High School (NHS) is 995. The total number of EL students at NHS is182 which is 18% of the student body.

In the following clips, Principal Mark Beebe and Assistant Principal Jill Thom outline the program for English learner students at Natomas High School. Both of these clips describe how the high school has focused on creating a team of EL Lead Teachers to support their approximately 150 EL students. This “team” approach is a re-occurring theme in Natomas as the district consistently brings together staff with many different roles and backgrounds to support EL students.

The EL Lead Teacher team consists of three members: Jeff Bryan, Aaron Knight and Maria Rios. This team works collaboratively to meet the needs of Natomas High School EL students so that they ensured personalized support during their high school experience.

Here the team discusses their work with EL students and why this support structure has been an effective means for keeping EL students engaged at the high school level.

Again the topic of teamwork is discussed in this clip as the teachers talk about how the team approach to supporting EL students has been effective for EL students at Natomas High School.

Lastly, the team discusses how their work with parents creates a framework for students in the classroom. The EL Lead Teacher team has found multiple opportunities to connect with parents and share student progress or concerns.

STOP and THINK- What are some structures that are in place at your high school that continually support EL students both in the classroom and out? What are some ways that this team approach to the work might be implemented at your school?
