This routine affects student learning in a very positive way. As the teacher states, by having students reflect on their own work, it makes it much more likely that they're going to do it again (reflect and possibly revise) the next time they write something. I have my students reflect on a regular basis, but I haven't always had such a positive focus. I would like to implement this practice of highlighting "shining moments" into my teaching practice because it increases student awareness of what they have accomplished and also creates a positive learning environment. The teacher could use the CA ELD Standards as a guide for identifying areas her English learners can work on in their performance and for adjusting the level of scaffolding the students might need, as well as any support they might need in order to participate in the activity.
