What suggestions from the article can you use to help you address Reading Standard 5 with your EL students?
This approach would be useful for all of my students, not just my ELs. I like the chart of the organizational patterns and signal words. Introducing those explicitly should help my students better distinguish text structure. I especially like how the article demonstrates how to help students annotate text for cause and effect and create graphic organizers, customized to the text, to process that information. I think students would really understand both the historical content as well as the text structure by doing these activities, and then be better prepare to look for the same patterns when they are reading independently in the future.
