I teach 8th-grade U.S. History. In it we briefly study how the nation was founded. We discuss the reasons the colonists separated from Great Britain. To address Shift 2: "Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text," I would have students study the Declaration of Independence and analyze the specific textual evidence outlined in that document that supports the colonists' decision to declare independence.
