How do you assist your students with learning general academic and domain-specific vocabulary when teaching history/social studies?

Before reading a history/social studies text with a class, I pre-read it and determine the general academic and discipline-specific key concepts and terms that the students need for comprehension, for completing the related task, and for developing content knowledge. Then I evaluate which terms need to be pre-taught, can be determined in context, or are terms I can easily explain in a step-aside and how I would do that. Whenever possible, I try to give the students friendly definitions of the words with visual representations and have them practice using the words in sentences both orally and in writing.
