How does the increased emphasis on formal, academic talk impact your work with your students? How can you address Speaking and Listening Standards in history/social studies?
I think it will require me to be more intentional on planning structured academic talk. I will teach my students some discussion vocabulary and sentence frames to support their ability to engage in discussion of content and texts. Just like with writing, I can provide students with opinion/argumentative or explanatory questions for them to discuss. History/social studies has plenty of engaging subjects for students to debate and consider with evidence. In third-grade I can have students discuss the responsibilities of citizens or analyze and discuss how local producers use natural resources to create their products.
