The teacher incorporated partner and group work for students to learn about chemical and physical changes. She had groups peer edit through discussion, and then had the entire class participate in collaborative conversations to determine the best definition. She also used word walls to encourage academic vocabulary.
2. In regard to the CA CCSS for Reading, RST6-8.2 and RST6-8.4, and Language, L6-8.6, describe the strategies the teacher uses to integrate these standards into the science learning sequence.
The teacher used student choice to access reading information-either text or the iPad. She structured the reading to be discussed in groups, look for the central ideas of the passage. Meaning of words was addressed through the word wall as well as using academic vocabulary in the context of writing.
3. In regard to CA CCSS for Writing WHST6-8.2, WHST6-8.4, WHST6-8.5, WHST6-8.8 and WHST6-8.9, describe how the teacher scaffolded writing for students.
The teacher carefully structured the learning sequence to include individual, partner, and group, and finally class writing. Through this process, peers edited each other's work. Writing was integrated with oral language and reading experiences.
