After reviewing the student examples, how do you think having students write a variety of science notebook entries develops students' informational and/or argumentative writing skills?
The entries that a teacher asks student to make in their notebooks helps students develop thinking skills. Asking for student's prior knowledge helps them recognize what they know and don't know. Asking them to gather and record data helps students organize their thoughts. Analysis and explanation of the data helps students make connections from their work to scientific principles. When students are asked to provide a piece of writing as a product, they can provide evidence if they have kept a thorough record of experiments, readings and discussions while they were doing the investigations.
