Describe the student thinking you would like to find in student science notebooks if the notebook provided a "window" into students thinking?
When reading a student's notebook, the teacher should be able to determine how the student was thinking at the beginning of a lesson or unit. In other words, the student writing should reveal their prior knowledge. The teacher should also be able to determine how the student gathered and made sense of data from experiments, discussions, reading, and from prior writing in their notebook. Lastly, a notebook that reveals thinking that will have metacognitive expressions. These expressions might be as simple as a question or exclamation mark, or more complex as students detail what they understand and what they still question or wonder about.
