Grade 8, Theatre

CA CCSS Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subject (RST)
Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).

Grade 8
VAPA, Theatre, Artistic Perception
Use the vocabulary of theatre, such as ensemble, proscenium, thrust, and arena staging, to describe theatrical experiences.

Lesson Idea:

In 8th grade, the California theatre historical and cultural standard (3.1) indicates that the students are to be studying ways in which American history has been reflected in theatre. Students have just finished reading the play by the American playwright Thornton Wilder, "Our Town" which has extensive stage directions and uses pantomime throughout.

After walking through and discussing the stage directions in the play and seeing diagrams of different types of stages, the students are asked in pairs to choose which type of stage the play would use to best convey the play's meaning. Each pair is asked to review all stage diagrams, read again the set directions, and present to the class their stage choice and the reasons for the selection.
